Presidential Candidates get 500 Words to Impress the Drimnagh People
Drimnagh is Good has invited the 7 candidates running the Presidents position in October 2011, for up to 500 words about their campaign, their policies, & their reasons for standing. It is hoped that this 500 words will have some relevancy for the 12,000 or so people living in Drimnagh.
We will be publishing all submissions from candidates without editing & it will hopefully provide an interesting local conversation & awareness to what the candidates want to bring to the post.
E-mails were sent out to all candidates last week (except Dana as have been unable to get her email address) asking for their 500 words.
500 Words from Michael D Higgins
The first response received is from Michael D Higgins.
“I am asking for your support because I have a passionate belief in our country and in a Republic founded on equality, participation and respect for the fundamental dignity of all citizens.
As a child raised in Co Clare, I knew poverty and loss, but also learnt about compassion and the power of possibility even in difficult times. Later, as the first member of my family to go to college, I found ideas to match the instinct for equality I felt in my heart. I have remained true to those early principles by working all my life for social justice and human rights. As President, I would dedicate both head and heart to the service of our country and people.
I offer a lifetime of public service and a track record as an advocate for a fairer and more inclusive society along with a genuine understanding of our constitution and laws. I also bring extensive experience of representing Ireland internationally in its very best sense, from peace-building and diplomacy to active promotion of our film and creative industries.
I believe our country is full of potential. Everywhere I have been in Ireland I have met with imaginative, generous and creative people of all ages who are keen to play their part in shaping our shared future – a future that is both visionary and practical. This is a time to play to our strengths and work together to create a new kind of Ireland. As President, I would devote my experience, passion and ability to enhancing our citizenship at home and our reputation abroad.”
